Buying a guidebook is one of the best things you’ll ever do before hitting the trail.
My first one, sent to me by my brother, was Karen Berger’s Hiking & Backpacking. Even though I had lived in the mountains for years and had hiked my fair share of trails, this book still had plenty of useful things to teach me such as how to reduce pack weight, strategies for tackling blisters, and simple trail recipes.
While guidebooks are useful for day hikers, they are essential for backpackers. Unless you already have extensive backpacking experience, you should never undertake an overnighter without first equipping yourself with a lot of know-how and some good equipment. Guidebooks are the perfect place where you can acquire this information.
Oftentimes, folks are hesitant to buy guidebooks because they think all the information they need is on the internet. To some extent, this may be true. But the benefit of owning several useful guidebooks is that you have the opportunity to cross-reference much of the information you find on the web. What’s more, guidebooks often reveal important information that you never knew you needed to know in the first place.
On the following pages, you will find links to books that are worth purchasing if you are interested in hiking and backpacking.
Happy Reading!
